Who we are
At RUE, our mission is to develop student leaders who strengthen families, influence their peers, and create positive change in their schools and communities. We envision a generation of youth empowered to lead healthy, purposeful lives—building stronger schools, families, and communities for the future. Guided by our core values of mentorship, discipline, and leadership development, we take a holistic approach that partners with schools, families, and community organizations to support students at every stage of their journey. To date, we have served more than 200 students, and we plan to serve 50 or more students annually in the coming years. Through consistent mentorship, intentional skill-building, and growth opportunities, RUE equips young people with the tools they need to graduate ready for success in college, career, and life—while inspiring them to make a lasting impact in the world around them.
Our History
Our Story
For over a decade, RUE has been on the frontlines, committed to helping students in Washington, D.C.’s inner-city communities rise above the challenges of trauma, systemic disinvestment, and broken systems.
Our founder and CEO, Phillip Ford, has spent his life serving youth in schools, churches, summer camps, community outreach programs, and juvenile detention centers. In 2017, he joined with Rob Sidel and Welton Bonner to launch The Movement Martial Arts, using the gospel, martial arts, and leadership training to transform lives.
In 2022, RUE was established to continue this vision—empowering Black and Brown youth through mentorship, leadership training, and Taekwondo. Rooted in our 3-D model of Development, Discipleship, and Discipline, we equip students with the tools to break cycles of violence, hopelessness, and underachievement.
Our program doesn’t just build fighters—it builds leaders. Through confidence, discipline, and emotional resilience, our students are prepared to overcome adversity and shape a better future. By partnering with families, schools, and community organizations, we provide holistic support—from mental health resources to academic guidance.
At RUE, we aren’t waiting for change—we’re creating it. We are disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline and cultivating a new generation of peacemakers, advocates, and catalysts for change who will return to their communities stronger, wiser, and ready to lead.
Leadership Development
Every student has the ability to lead. RUE provides hands-on training, coaching, and opportunities that teach students how to influence peers, strengthen schools, and create positive change in their communities.
Four Pillars
Mentorship
Strong relationships fuel growth. Our mentors walk alongside students, offering guidance, accountability, and encouragement while partnering with families and schools to support each child’s success.
Health & Wellness
Healthy students are thriving students. We promote physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being, equipping young people with the tools to build balance, resilience, and confidence.
Family Engagement
Student success begins at home. RUE strengthens families through workshops, resources, and collaboration—ensuring students are supported at every stage of their journey.
